The Australian flushable wipes standard is called AS/NZS 5328:2022 Flushable Products, and it sets out what a product must do to be safely flushed down the toilet in Australia and New Zealand. It was developed with utilities and industry groups to reduce sewer blockages and gives manufacturers clear criteria and test methods before they can claim a product is “flushable”. The standard is voluntary, but products that say they are flushable or use the official flushable logo are expected to meet all of its requirements.​

Under AS/NZS 5328:2022, a product must pass a series of “flushability” tests that check how it behaves in real sewer conditions. These tests cover things like being able to clear the toilet and household drain line, not jamming pumps, breaking down quickly into small pieces (typically under about 2.45 cm within an hour), settling appropriately in treatment plants, and biodegrading rather than persisting in the system. A key requirement is that compliant flushable wipes must not contain plastics, which helps reduce microplastic pollution in waterways and oceans.​

The standard also includes labelling rules so customers can easily see whether a product is suitable for flushing. Only products that have passed all the tests can display the approved flushable symbol or state that they comply with AS/NZS 5328:2022, and misuse of these claims can lead to regulatory action. Water authorities encourage consumers to follow the “4Ps” rule: only flush poo, pee, toilet paper, and products that carry clear proof they meet the Flushable Products Standard.
